Words On Life, Love, Hurt, and Healing

I’ve been writing since I was a little girl. And while I don’t consider myself to be incredible at it, I love to write, and have found great comfort in it. I also love to read. And in doing so, I’ve stumbled upon many words over the years that have helped me to feel less alone, and have really given me a sense of comfort in dark times. So, I thought why not compile those quotes and share them with you? I mean even if only one resonates with you, perhaps it will be exactly what you need to hear now, or sometime down the road.

REMINDERS AND AFFIRMATIONS

“Perhaps it’s time to stop and see that you’re actually doing it – this living thing. You are putting one foot in front of the other and doing as best as you can. And that’s all you need to do right now.” – Rebecca Ray

“Forgiveness is another name for freedom.” – Byron Katie

“You don’t need to explain the way you heal to anyone.” – Simi Fromen

“Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in mind.” – David G. Allen

“My entire life can be described in one sentence: It didn’t go as planned and that’s okay.” – Rachel Wolchin

ON DEPRESSION AND MENTAL ILLNESS

“I have learned that when sadness comes to visit me, all I can do is say ‘I see you.’ I spend time with it, get up, and say goodbye. I don’t push it away, I own it. And because I own it, I let it go.” – Carolina Zacaria

“Depression is also…Smaller than you. Always, it is smaller than you, even when it feels vast. It operates within you, you do not operate within it. It may be a dark cloud passing across the sky, but – if that is the metaphor – you are the sky. You were there before it. And the cloud can’t exist without the sky, but the sky can exist without the cloud.” – Matt Haig

“I learned that my sadness never destroyed what was great about me. You just have to go back to that greatness, find that one little light that’s left. I’m lucky I found one little glimmer stored away.” – Lady Gaga

“After all, the most interesting of us have been broken and mended and broken again.” – Jenny Lawson

“You are alive. You have fought and battled them. You are scarred and worn and sometimes exhausted and were perhaps even close to giving up, but you did not.” – Jenny Lawson

Mentally ill. It’s a phrase that once scared me, but now I wear it like an old jacket, comfortable but ugly.” – Jenny Lawson

“Despite what your feelings may be telling you, the pain you’re experiencing may be a chapter in your life, but it will not be all there is to your life. You have a future on the other side of this.” – Brittney Moses

“And suddenly we realize that the things we were ashamed of are the same things everyone deals with at one time of another. We are so much less alone than we think.” – Jenny Lawson

“Because quitting might be easier, but it wouldn’t be better.” – Jenny Lawson

ON RELATIONSHIPS AND BEING ALONE

“Healthy relationships will always be worth the wait. Don’t be afraid of ‘lonely.’ Focus on building a positive relationship with yourself in the meantime.” – Reyna Biddy

“The greatest gift you can give someone is your own personal development. I used to say, ‘If you will take care of me, then I will take care of you.’ Now I say ‘I will take care of me for you, If you will take care of you for me.'” – Jim Rohn

“If only you could see the love that is meant for you, you wouldn’t worry so much about the love that isn’t.” – Kristin Lohr

“I think it’s important to realize you can miss something, but not want it back.” – Paul Coelho

“Letting go of what you can’t change gives you the greatest freedom. You cannot have the relationships you want when your energy is consumed by the relationships that can’t or don’t want you.” – Vienna Pharaon

ON LETTING GO

“How would your life be different if you learned to let go of the things that have already let go of you?” – Steve Maraboli

“Holding on is believing that there’s only a past; letting go is knowing that there’s a future.” – Daphne Rose Kingma

“Perhaps we are most courageous when we let go.” – Alison Malee

“There’s a trick to the ‘graceful exit.’ It begins with the vision to recognize when a job, a life stage, or a relationship is over – and let it go. It means leaving what’s over without denying its validity or its past importance to our lives. It involves a sense of future, a belief that every exit line is an entry, that we are moving up, rather than out.” – Ellen Goodman

“Goodbyes are actually just introductions to ourselves.” – Vienna Pharaon

“It’s okay to grieve for an end and welcome a beginning at once. You can miss what’s been and look forward to what’s to come in the same moment.” – Rebecca Ray

ON SELF-LOVE

“Emptiness means there are places in you you are not done fully loving.” – Della Hicks-Wilson

“Have we ever taken a moment to consider that the love we so desperately seek is our own? We are so busy trying to give it away when it is us who need it most.” – Mark Groves

“Loving myself authentically and unapologetically gave me the courage to love others the same.” – Alex Elle

We all find hope or solace in different things and in different ways. For me, both reading the words of others and writing my own words, has helped me process a lot of grief, loss, and difficult emotions. I hope that even one of these quotes was helpful to you today.

With love,

-SK
