A few years ago when my life absolutely fell apart, I found myself frequenting the “Self-Help” section at the bookstore out of absolute desperation. Little did I know, I would end up reading books that had a wildly profound impact on the way that I think, behave, and now choose to live my life. Whether you’re an avid reader like myself, or someone who can’t remember the last time you read a book, I think that almost anyone could find something beneficial from reading the following books:
MASTERING YOUR MEAN GIRL – MELISSA AMBROSINI
RECOMMENDED FOR: Anyone seeking change in their lives. Anyone that struggles with self-love and self-worth. Anyone that wants to learn how they can change their circumstances by adjusting their inner dialogue.
So, what’s your “mean girl?” Melissa refers to your mean girl as the little voice inside your head that tells you you’re not good enough, not pretty enough, not skinny enough, not deserving of love, not capable of getting the job – basically anything negative/critical that that little voice seems to want us to believe. Mastering Your Mean Girl is about taking charge of that voice, and changing the way that we speak to ourselves, in order to change our lives.
A FEW OF MY FAV QUOTES:
“You go to the gym to work on your biceps, triceps, and glutes, and the same principle applies for your self-love muscle: it needs to be worked on regularly.”
“Remember, there are no mistakes, just opportunities for evolution.”
“How you feel about yourself is reflected in every choice you make and every action you take.”
“Your self-worth has such a major impact on how your life unfolds and what you attract into it.”
THE POWER IS WITHIN YOU – LOUISE HAY
RECOMMENDED FOR: Anyone struggling with self-love. Anyone that wants to learn the act of self-love. Anyone that feels like they lack control in their life, as if life is happening to them instead of with them.
Louise Hay recently passed away, and let me tell you how grateful I am that she left us with her written thoughts in so many of her books. When I first read this book I had no idea what self-love was. I struggled miserably with self-loathing, I couldn’t find a single thing I liked about myself – let alone loved, and my self-esteem was in a downward spiral. In The Power is Within You, Louise talks about how we can genuinely learn to love ourselves, exactly as we are. She discusses the importance of self-love, and how a lack of self-love can lead to unhealthy relationships, and ultimately an unhappy life.
A FEW OF MY FAV QUOTES:
“Unfortunately, many of us will not love ourselves until we lose the weight, or get the job, or get the raise, or the boyfriend, or whatever. We often put conditions on our love. But we can change. We can love ourselves as we are right now.”
“We have to start believing that we deserve all the good that life has to offer.”
“The only person who is going to make a change in your life is you.”
“It’s not selfish to love ourselves. It clears us so that we can love ourselves enough to love other people.”
YOU ARE A BADASS – JEN SINCERO
RECOMMENDED FOR: Anyone needing inspiration, motivation. Anyone who wants to make changes in their life, but isn’t certain as to how to initiate those changes. Anyone needing to learn self-love. Literally just about any human could find something beneficial in this book.
This book is divine. It’s not your typical self-help book, if you couldn’t already tell from the title. Jen uses humour, tough-love, and her own experiences to encourage anyone currently “stuck” in their lives to go for it, by taking steps to change their life. I have highlighted so many quotes in this book, it basically looks like a university textbook now. I always refer to certain chapters or lines when I’m lacking inspiration, and this book is definitely one that you can read and re-read over and over again.
A FEW OF MY FAV QUOTES:
“You’re on a journey with no definied beginning, middle or end. There are no wrong twists and turns. There is just being.”
“Faith is the muscle you use when you decide to blast outside of your comfort zone and transform your life into something that’s practically unrecognizable to you in your present reality. Faith smothers your fear of the unknown. Faith allows you to take risks. Faith is the stuff of ‘leap and the net will appear.'”
“If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.”
FURIOUSLY HAPPY – JENNY LAWSON
RECOMMENDED FOR: Anyone living with depression, anxiety, or any form of mental illness. Anyone seeking to feel less alone about their mental illness. Anyone that could use a good laugh. Anyone that feels isolated, lonely, or broken because of their mental illness. Anyone looking for that “Omg they understand me” moment.
This is not a “here’s how to overcome depression” self-help book. In fact it’s not a self-help book, it’s a memoir. Jenny somehow finds a way to talk about mental illness in a way that makes you laugh, makes you feel understood, and makes you feel as though you’re not the only self-proclaimed “crazy” one. Anytime I’ve talked about my depression and anxiety publicly, I’m always met with at least one person that writes to me to thank me for helping them feel less alone. THIS book helped me feel less alone. It helped me realize that there are many of us struggling, and most importantly – that that’s okay. We’re okay. Please, please, if you are living with depression, anxiety, or any form of mental illness, consider picking up this book. It might lift your spirits, and provide you with some perspective. Jenny also owns a taxidermy raccoon that she talks about in the book, how wonderfully fucking loony is that?
A FEW OF MY FAV QUOTES:
“After all, the most interesting of us have been broken and mended and broken again.”
“Mentally ill. It’s a phrase that once scared me, but now I wear it like an old jacket, comfortable but ugly.”
“Without the dark there isn’t light.”
“And suddenly we realize that the things we were ashamed of are the same things everyone deals with at one time or another. We are so much less alone than we think.”
“You are alive. You have fought and battled them. You are scarred and worn and sometimes exhausted and were perhaps even close to giving up, but you did not.”
So, those are my favourite books that I recommend. Now, what about yours?
